Hannah Farrell

Hannah Farrell combines photography with elements of sculpture and installation. Drawing upon personal experiences of place, sexuality, youth and gender, her process illustrates a questioning of solidity and dualism, in both the human condition and the photographic medium. In her latest works, Farrell photographs men and combines the prints with living and static objects picked up in discount shops. She paper mâchés, paints and manipulates her materials and photographs her own interactions with them. These photographs are then intimately hand printed using traditional darkroom methods. Another on going series of work ‘Journeying’ uses a combination of photographs, two-tone spray paint and aluminium to create objects that reference being young and driving in men's cars at night. By over-exposing her photographs and manipulating the surface, she presents the viewer with void-like, visceral spaces that shift and change with the light. Informed by notions of non-self, transience and healing, Farrell is concerned with eliciting a guttural response within the viewer, while simultaneously reflecting upon modern day culture and furthering the dialogue between image and object. Biography Hannah Farrell (b.1990, Morecambe) lives and works in Manchester, UK. Since completing her Bachelor of Arts degree in 2014 she has exhibited throughout the UK and Europe, including commissions and residencies from Castlefield Gallery and Singular Gallery, Croatia. She has carried out talks and workshops at Manchester School of Art and the V&A and has been featured in Wallpaper*, The British Journal of Photography and the Catlin Art Guide 2015. Farrell completed the PAPER Gallery Mentorship scheme and the Zabludowicz Collection's Master Class 2017. She received the De'Longhi Art Projects Artist Award at London Art Fair 2017 and has recently been predicted as one of 10 'Young British artists to watch' by the London Evening Standard.
