Exhibition Dates: 11 June - 6 August 2022
Private View: Thursday 9 June, 6-9pm
A Modest Evening: Friday 5th August from 8pm til late

PAPER, in collaboration with Independent record label No Such Thing, present an evening of art, music, food and drink from artist/musicians Ruby Tingle and Left Winter in order to welcome Berlin gallery, Axel Obiger to Manchester, as they prepare for their exhibition as part of A Modest Show at PAPER.  The event takes place at Soup Kitchen on Friday 5th August with complimentary food and drink. The event will be ticketed.
Ruby Tingle is an audio-visual artist working with expanded collage and progressive electronica. Her work Familiars explores the artist’s connection to spirit animals and the colour red, inspired by recent time spent at her local wetlands during the last year. Ruby will transform the venue using collage, sound and scent to tell stories of and develop her new performance character, Daughter of the Lagoons, a woman in a red dress who cares for imagined or extinct creatures.
Left Winter is a cross-disciplinary artist and composer based in Manchester and Berlin. Left Winter presents a new photography and sound installation based on the contents of cobwebs, mainly remnants of insects eaten by spiders, exploring preservation and stories set in undisturbed and neglected human spaces. A new composition will be released with the show’s launch and form an immersive audio element at the gallery.
To mark their new releases and bridge the gap between their contemporary art practices and music, both artists would like support to create new live works to be performed at Soup Kitchen as a companion to their exhibition at PAPER (running from 4 June – 13 August 2022). Inspired by the Eat Manchester Artists brief for this years British Art Show, both new works deal with forms of consumption both spiritually and physically. Their development into brief interactive performances would bring the artists ideas and music to life, making their unique practices more tangible.
Axel Obiger is an artist run contemporary gallery in Berlin Mitte. Prior to Covid, PAPER and Axel Obiger were intending to collaborate on two exhibitions that would be hosted in each venue. In August 2022, this will finally be realised and Axel Obiger will come to Manchester to curate , Paper on Paper, a collaborative exhibition between two artist-led galleries from Manchester and Berlin.
